Floorless

Creative Direction, Video Direction, Post Production

South Florida Industrial Metal Titans “Floorless” contracted me to make some of the most psychedelic, harsh, and fun projects of my career for their full-length album “Telepath”.

This project unabashedly glorifies distortion, feedback, lo-fi, and video error, and accurately reflects the bleak and nightmarish music.

Discipline Video

Brutalism, analog Feedback, Video Error, Audio Reactive Animations… all on display.

The band was recorded on greenscreen and was both generatively, and edited by hand, fed into a CRT Monitor, and Rerecorded to pull out the warm distortion of analog devices. In addition to footage, imagery of brutalist structures, construction, and broken geometry were remixed with Resolume, TouchDesigner and After Effects.

We took advantage of the chaotic techniques used and applied the animation, brutalist architecture and image feedback, and composited the chaos over the band’s performance.

Logo

Floorless’ logo, is esoteric, minimalist, striking, and arcane. Their brand is full of brutalist architecture, repeating hypnotic patterns, stark black and white contrast, and unsettling imagery. Most importantly, this had to shine through into the video projects.

BPM Sync

One of the great things about electronic music is its adherence to a clock. Unlike traditional music, this rarely changes throughout the song. This project remains interesting to me due to the calculation of determining BPM, finding that length in milliseconds, and then applying those intervals to keyframes and audio triggers.

At the time, Spotify had just allowed users to upload video loops at 7 seconds per song – they needed to be tempo locked. They needed to be seamless. Then needed to be loop throughout the duration of the track, but still work throughout the song.

The biggest challenge was creating small looping videos, while retaining the feeling of each track on the album.

Listen to the full length here.
Best done on your phone, – you’ll get to see the looping animations in action!

Band Visual Inspiration

The album cover’s geometry, repetitive motif, and inherit distortion is echoed throughout the visuals, the music, and Floorless’ branding.
